THE CRYSTAL STAIR
While wan'dring through my life one day
I chanced upon a crystal stair
Up it rose into the sky
But barely did I see it there
I turned around and walked away
And swore I'd come another day
And climb upon the crystal stair
When I see the way more clear
But days did pass and still did I
Avoid the stair that'd caught my eye
And finally when a year had passed
I searched again, returned at last
The steps were much more clear that day
So I embarked without delay
Not noticing that passersby
Did not perceive the steps on high
I climbed the marvel rapidly
Before it might decide to flee
But as I marched the way grew bright
And far ahead a torch shed light
Now I saw my fantasies
Women, men, birds and trees
Come to life before my eyes
But they were glass to my surprise
Now a dancer, now a snake
A thousand patterns did they make
A fish, a dove, a rainbow tree
A unicorn prancing regally
Now the torch more vividly
Did light the way for me to see
Amidst the dancing waves of light
I saw a much more lovely sight
Within this world of glassy things
A minstrel sits and waits and sings
And as he plays his harp of gold
More crystal visions do unfold
His fingers played across the strings
Creating all those wondrous things
But within this realm of fantasy
The man is all there is that's free
And still did I watch wantingly
For so did I wish to be free
But freedom always has a price
And golden coins seem just as nice
But where the torch had lit the way
And led me to this place that day
I wished to choose as best I can
So slowly I approached the man
He wears a smile on his face
His lyrics hold a type of grace
His fingers play so soft, yet loud
And from them flows a crystal cloud
I heard the word, at last did I
Know where I was, and how and why
Amidst the crystals in the skies
Away from Earth and all its lies
And for that song did I return
Beneath the stair, where I did learn
The stair is always there to see
If you search most earnestly
Now I have resumed my life
No longer hurt by petty strife
The singer's words, oh how they burn
Until the day of my return
